Chapter Twelve

Dev had spent the better part of the day exploring the musty old attic, browsing through trunks and boxes filled with old clothes and memorabilia from his family's past. Fascinated, Dev looked through the old family photo albums. His dad really didn't know much about his own family. After the death of his grandmother, his grandfather had left the old house with his infant son and hadn't returned except to demolish. So Dev's dad didn't know that much about the house or the family. From all accounts of old newspaper clippings and photos, his ancestors had been a driving force in the nearby town. Though it was now practically deserted, it had once been a thriving hub for the surrounding communities.

Digging into the bottom of one of the old trunks, Dev uncovered yet another old album and pulled it out. He sat back on the floor, opening it in his lap. The first page was filled with a spidery crawl of writing. It listed the date and birth information of his great-great-great-great grandfather in 1828. Next to it was an old newspaper article that detailed the death of a migrant worker on the property on the same day of Benjamin's birth.

Slowly turning the pages, Dev discovered the entire album was filled with pages of birth announcements and the adjacent pages contained articles of more deaths. All on the same days as the births.

"Oh, my God, this is fucking bizarre," Dev muttered to himself.

"Dev?"

"Yeah, I'm up here." Dev answered as he turned the page again. His eyes widened as he read the information about his father's birth, and the announcement of his grandmother's death.

A minute later Jay appeared in the doorway. "What are you looking at, love?" He walked over and sat behind Dev, nestling close.

He only half paid attention to Jay as he leaned back against him. "This old album. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen. It lists my families' births and on each page is an article about who died here on the same day. The only one not listed is me."

"Damn." Jay rested his chin on Dev's shoulder. "Did your dad tell you about this?"

"No, he doesn't know that much about his family. Granddad never said much. But my dad is in here, and my grandmother is the death listed for the same day. And the rest of the deaths are really strange. One construction worker fell from scaffolding while some work was being done on the house. Somehow a rope got wrapped around his neck and hung him. That was the same day my great-great grandfather was born." Closing the album, he turned his head to look back at Jay.

Jay lifted an eyebrow and when he spoke, there was no humor in his words. "There isn't some sort of curse on your family, is there?"

"Curse?" Blinking, it took Dev a moment to shake his head. "Not that I know of. But when my great grandfather was born, a drifter murdered one of the guests of my great-great grandfather on the same day.
